What is it?

The Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione is a Gran Turismo vehicle produced in a limited series (500 Coupe units and 329 Spider units) from 2007 to 2010. The name “8C” indicates the number of cylinders of the engine. Its development took a long time, as evidenced by the release of its prototype at the Frankfurt Motor Show as early as 2003.

The aesthetics of the 8C impresses with its perfect proportions and smooth lines. While vaguely reminiscent of an Aston Martin Vanquish, this Gran Turismo has the typical details of any self-respecting Alfa Romeo, such as the triangular grille and the particular shape of the large 20-inch alloy wheels. The interior is simple, but well cared for and with many carbon fiber finishes; there is no digital infotainment. According to Jeremy Clarkson, these characteristics have allowed the 8C to earn the title of “most beautiful car ever built”. Overall, the car measures 4,27 x 1,90 meters for a weight of 1585kg for the Coupe and 1675kg for the Spider.

The super-light frame is made of a mix of carbon fiber and Nomex, a fireproof composite material also used to make racing suits. The Alfa Romeo 8C accommodates in the front a Ferrari F136 engine also seen on the contemporary Maserati GranTurismo S. The F136 is a 4.7-liter V8 with four valves per cylinder that has a torque of 470NM and a power of 450HP. The 6-speed sequential gearbox was instead positioned at the front to favor the weight balance between the front and rear of the car, which is respectively 49% and 51%. For the first time in many years, Alfa Romeo decided to re-adopt a rear-wheel-drive system, neglected for a long time by the “Biscione” brand for the construction of its sports cars.
