The second generation of the 1 Series is available from 2011 in both three-door (F21) and five-door (F20) versions. It can be purchased, in addition to the basic variant, also in the “Sport” and “Urban” versions. Compared to the previous generation, the proportions and aesthetics remain similar. In general, however, the lines become more delicate and give a more youthful look to the car. 4,32 meters in length are enough to guarantee a good internal ability even for rear passengers despite the nose of the Series 1 is very long. The trunk capacity of the F20 when the rear seats are raised is 360 liters. The infotainment consists of a generous screen that can be adjusted using various buttons that give excellent touch quality and the iconic “iDrive” wheel. Many mechanical components are shared with the Series 3 F39. The brakes are all disc brakes in each configuration. It is possible to opt for either a six-speed manual gearbox or an eight-speed automatic, which matches engines ranging from 116 (116d version) to 320 (M150i version) horsepower. This latest engine is a 3-liter and is the same as the 6 Series F12 and F13. In some countries, a weakened version of the 116d is also sold: it is called 114d and delivers only 95HP. In 2015 the F20 and F21 are subject to a restyling in which the headlights are now all LED and many engines within the range are redesigned. The second facelift of the Series 1 is announced in 2017. With this update, various aesthetic changes are introduced both in the interior and in the exterior, but none of them are very relevant. In the same year, the 1 Series Sedan was also presented with the code name of F52. In 2019, the third generation of 1-Series comes out to replace the F21.
