The Mercedes SLK, which translating the abbreviation means “light sports with short wheelbase”, represents the intention of Mercedes to produce a medium-high end roadster. The biggest peculiarity of this first generation is the roof, no longer in canvas but in steel (a choice that has not been adopted for more than 50 years) that opens in just 25 seconds. Another particularity is that, at the time, the SLK R170 was the smallest Mercedes ever built, and this also allows excellent aerodynamic values. The chassis and suspension are the same as in the C-Class W202, but the structure is 29 centimeters shorter. The CLK is another car similar to this one… but that’s another story.
