In 2009 the Saab 9-5 reappeared in its second generation with a more streamlined and modern aesthetics. However, the classic setting of Saab cars is not lacking, characterized by the presence of the unmissable Hockey Stick at the C-pillar and other details that have always distinguished the cars of the Swedish brand. The car, categorized as a Sedan or, since 2011, also Station Wagon, measures 500 x 186 centimeters, and its weight varies from 1570 to 1870 kilograms depending on the version and equipment chosen. The platform on which the Saab 9-5 2nd gen. is based in the General Motors Epsilon II, which is mainly composed of high-strength steel and aluminum. The good structure and technologies such as ABS and Adaptive Cruise Control have allowed the 2nd gen. 9-5 to obtain the maximum score of five stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests. Inside, the car is not equipped with particular technologies, nor with lavish elements, but gives an idea of general solidity. Among the most interesting technologies is the Head-Up Display, a rarity at the time. The equipment and some mechanical characteristics vary depending on the variant chosen between the basic “Linear”, the intermediate “Vector” and the sportier “Aero”. Only the latter variant can be combined with the most powerful engine, namely a petrol V6 2.8 300HP. The other petrol engines are four-cylinder, one 2.0 with 220HP and the other 1.6 with 180HP. There are two 2.0 diesel engines, one of 160 and the other of 190HP. All engines come with a turbocharger. While only the 2.8 300HP benefits from an automatic/sequential gearbox, all other engines are paired with an automatic transmission. In both cases, the gearbox is six-speed. Following poor sales (barely 10.000 units) and the financial collapse of Saab, the 9-5 was retired along with its younger sister 9-3 in 2012, marking the end of four-wheeler production by Saab AB.
