The fifth series Passat (with B5 platform) was launched in 1996 in Europe and from 1998 in North America. This version of the Passat shares most of its structure with the 1994 Audi A4 B5, which has an elongated wheelbase compared to it, increasing the space available for rear passengers by 86 mm. From an aesthetic and mechanical point of view, the fifth Passat is completely different from the previous versions; the style, curated by Hartmut Warkuss, will then be taken up in the Golf MKIV and the Bora. Compared to what was on the market in those years in the D segment, the Passat set a new benchmark both from a technical point of view and in the overall quality of the project.
