The Volvo S80 was born in 1998 and proposes itself as the flagship of the Swedish brand. Its first generation shares the chassis with the S70 and S60, while the V70 is its Estate version. This vehicle measures 4,82 x 1,83 meters and has a weight varying between 1600 and 1700kg depending on the equipment chosen. Among the characteristic elements of the design is the small rectangular grille, the strange semi-triangular shape of the rear lights, and, more generally, the sporty and aerodynamic setting. The beauty or otherwise of its aesthetics is the subject of numerous discussions, the fact is that the build quality is almost flawless. Also, the interiors have excellent quality and are easily recognizable. As per tradition, there are many technologies used for car safety; for the first time on a Volvo, there is the proprietary WHIPS (Whiplash Protection System) technology. According to research conducted by Volvo engineers, this system reduces 33% of the damage caused by violent accidents. Despite this, the S80 failed to get the maximum score in the Euro NCAP crash tests, scoring four stars out of five. The available engines are many and range from 140 to 276HP. In 2004 a slight redesign makes the aesthetic lines of the S80 less sharp, and overall the car looks less aggressive. The production of the 1st gen. ends in 2006 when the 2nd gen. comes out. The S80 enters the same range as the BMW 5 Series and Maserati Ghibli.
