Commonly known as the first generation of the BMW X1, the E84 was sold from 2009 to 2015 with the task of representing the entry-level SUV in its range, while remaining a high build quality vehicle. Compared to the contemporary X3, the car with which it shares the platform, the E84 has a similar but less aggressive design. The car measures 4,45 x 1,79 meters, and its chassis has been praised for the remarkable safety it can offer, as confirmed by the maximum five-star result in the Euro NCAP crash tests. The engines offered are numerous; the less powerful ones equip a 6-speed manual gearbox, while the more powerful a 6-speed sequential automatic. An exception is the 20d, which offers the manual as standard and which can be equipped with the automatic upon request. Since the X1 is a more urban car than a car that suits truly rough terrains, some versions have rear-wheel drive, thanks to which the vehicle is cheaper to produce and consumes less fuel. In 2012, a restyling made the BMW X1 slimmer and more modern on an aesthetic level and updated the engine range. At the end of its production, this 1st gen. was replaced by the 2nd gen.
