Codenamed as “Typ 181”, this Volkswagen is a Torpedo car known by various nicknames, such as “Thing” in America, “Kurierwagen” in Germany, and “Trekker” in the United Kingdom. Produced from 1969 to 1983, the Typ 181 was initially a light military vehicle created to meet the demands of NATO. Since the original project didn’t go through, the Type 181 was sold to the public in several countries, and was particularly successful in Mexico, where it is called “Safari”. Based on the Typ 3’s platform, this 3,78 meters long vehicle stands out for its old-style capote and resistant platform. The 4-cylinder boxer engine is shared with the Beetle and guarantees acceptable performance, also thanks to the fact that the weight is just 900 kilos.
