The Mazda 3 MPS BK, marketed in America under the name of Mazdaspeed 3, was initially a very performing car, sold only with the 260HP 2.3 engine, specifically designed to compete with many other models, among which it is worth mentioning the fifth-generation Golf GTI, the Ford Focus ST 2nd gen. and, according to some experts, among its rivals are also the legendary Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VIII and IX and Subaru Impreza WRX 2nd gen. Then, in the restyling of 2006, the philosophy of the Mazda 3, probably for marketing reasons, changed: in addition to the classic 2.3 Turbo that obviously remained, less powerful engines were introduced, some of which initially had homologation problems in Europe as they did not meet the Euro 4 standard. Three years after this restyling, the second generation of the Mazda 3 is announced.
